Balloon Night Glow

Preceding the Indiana State Fair, the annual gathering of balloonists takes place. On the eve of the 'hound and hare' balloon race, they inflate their hot air balloons and light up the night with the glow of their propane-fired heaters.

Downtown Indianapolis, Indiana, along the Central Canal. This location is opposite the U.S.S. Indianapolis Memorial which commemorates the WWII sinking of the cruiser by a Japanese submarine. Of the 1196 aboard, only 316 survived after 5 days afloat in the Pacific Ocean.
The Indianapolis had just delivered the components of "Little Boy", the atomic bomb which was later dropped on Hiroshima.
